Notes: [vla]
Ethel was in and out of the Orphanage, bound out to first one family then
another. On 25 April 1895 just days before her 13th birthday, she was "returned
to her relative James McNeely of Pike Co." By 1 April 1896 Ethel VanBibber
is back in the orphanage and on 15 April 1896 she was sent to the Poor Farm
by order of the County Commissioners.
On the 1900 Warrick Co., IN Federal
Census she is listed as a servant in the home of William Leslie. Her future
husband William Crow is listed as a boarder in this home. Listed with Ethel
is a 3 year old daughter, Marie VanBibber. Full name of daughter was, Artie
Marie VanBibber.
George and Artie Southwell are buried beside each
other in Wesley Cemetery. The mystery is Artie’s date of birth. When she
was first pointed out to me, on the 1900 Warrick Co., IN Federal Census,
she is listed born April 1897, and age 3. Her marriage record lists her
date of birth as 8 November 1895. Her grave marker lists her date of birth
as 8 November 1894. Her record of death lists her date of birth 14 November
1886, states her age is 32, her mother is listed Ethel Van Bibber, no father
listed. Now her mother, Ethel Van Bibber was born in 1882, so this can not
be correct. I suspect Artie's date of birth is 8 November 1896, as her mother
was back in the orphanage on 1 April 1896 and could have been pregnant at
that time. Artie's marriage record lists Clint Strong as her father. This
is the only document that lists a father for Artie.
Ethel was living
in Paradise, Warrick Co., IN, when she married Eugene Camp. He was residing
in Boonville and working as a Teamster.
Ethel was living in Chandler
when she married Sam. His occupation was listed as WPA.
