In May
1901 the family was abandon by the father at Petit Station, Daviess Co.,
KY, the mother took the children to Perry County, IN. The mother abandoned
the children at the County Poor Asylum in Cannelton, Perry Co., IN.
The mother was placed in the State Hospital in Evansville. The mother died
in 1915 and father never resurfaced.
The children remained at the Poor
Asylum while the county searched for a family member to take care of the
children. When no reliable family member could be located they were placed
in the Warrick County Orphans' Home in Boonville, Warrick Co., IN.

The three oldest children were placed in the Orphans Home by 1 March 1903.

There are two Findagrave memorials for Joseph
C. Grill. His death record states he was buried at Chandler, Indiana. Initially
he may have been interred in Crossroads Cemetery and later moved to Maple
Grove Cemetery. He has a marker in both cemeteries.
