		Basis of Claim. Alleges in declaration filed Sept 10, 1879 pneumonia at 
		Dallas or Pumpkin Vine Creek, GA, about June 1, 1864, from the affects 
		of which his stomach and lower bowels became diseased.
		
		Filed Dec 20/80 alleged lung fever at Dallas, GA, about May 15/64 and 
		about June 1, 64 pneumonia and diarrhea or dysentery, partially 
		recovered.
		
		State of Indiana, Warrick County SS. On this the 16th day of December 
		1880 personally appeared before me a clerk in and for Said County James 
		B. Carter who On his Oath Says that his Occupation for five years 
		previous to his enlistment in the United States Service, On the 12th day 
		of Aug 1862, was that of a farmer. That On Or about the 15th day of May 
		1864 while at or near Dallas in the State of Georgia and in the line of 
		his duty was taken Sick with pneumonia or lung fever and was Sent to the 
		field hospital, where he remained for Several days, when he was Sent 
		back to the hospital At Alitoona pass in the State of Georgia, where he 
		remained under treatment for Some ten days, from whence he was removed 
		On or about the 1st of June 1864 to the officers hospital at Lookout Mt 
		in the State of Tenn., where he was so badly prostrated with pneumonia 
		or Lung fever & diarrhea or Dysentina that his recovery was regarded as 
		extremely doubtful for a period of Some three weeks. That about the 4th 
		of July he commenced Convalescing and on or about the 1st day of Aug was 
		Sent to the front near Atlanta, GA where he did duty for a few days but 
		suffered a relapse, and was treated for chronic Diarrhea or Dysentery by 
		Dr. A. R. Byers Surgeon of the 65th Ind Regiment until about the 18th of 
		Aug 1864 when he was Sent to field hospital, from which he was removed 
		to Manella GA on the eve of Sherman�s flank movement on Atlanta, where 
		he remained in the Officers hospital until the 3rd day of Set, during 
		which time he was completely prostrated, the lower bowels becoming So 
		Sore and So badly ulcerated as to prevent him from walking more than a 
		Step or two at a time, until about the first of September when he 
		recovered sufficiently to enable him to go to his regiment near Decatur 
		GA when he was sent at his regiment that he might receive treatment from 
		A. R. Byers aforesaid That from the Said 3rd day of September he was 
		treated by the Said Byers until the 21st day of September 1864 when he 
		was discharged for physical disability. That from the army he returned 
		to his home near Boonville Indiana, where he remained until the Spring 
		of 1866 when he moved to Fremont Co, Iowa with a view to improving his 
		health by getting in to a purer atmosphere. Where he remained until the 
		year 1874. That during Said time there was only about three years that 
		he performed manual labor Sufficient to Support his family. That during 
		all this time he Super intend his farming, and managed to get a Support 
		for his family. That his Physical disability increased every year. That 
		he received medical advice and help from his family physician Dr. 
		McCracken of Sidney Iowa, but no radical treatment for the reason as he 
		alleged that he could not affect a cure. That in the year of 1874 the 
		applicant found that a Change of climate was necessary and returned 
		Warrick County Ind. with the double purpose of getting in to a milder 
		climate and getting his family among relations in case he Should die. 
		That for three years he lived on a farm managing and helping his family 
		as best he could to procure the necessaries of life. That for three 
		years last past he has not performed any manual labor, having through 
		the kindness of friends secured the position of Justice of the peace. 
		That Since January 1875 he has received help and medical advice from Dr. 
		D. A. Deforest of Boonville, but no radical treatment for the reason 
		that the Said Deforest did not think that such treatment would be 
		beneficial.
		
		State of Indiana, Warrick County SS. Before me a clerk in and for Said 
		County personally appeared James B. Carter Late a Lieut in Co E of the 
		65th Regiment of Indiana Vols who being first duly sworn on his oath 
		declares and Swears in relation to his Alleged disability, That he has 
		performed manual labor living each year since his discharge to wit 1865 
		� 66 � 67 � 68 Two thirds of that time 1869 � 70 �71 One half of Said 
		time 1872 � 73 � 74 one third of that time 1875 � 76 � 77 � one half of 
		that time 1878 � 79 � 80 � 81 has not performed a days labor. That the 
		first period of time except one year was spent in Iowa and the change of 
		climate appeared to implant fresh vigor and while there was no __ of his 
		Said disability, climate influences appeared to enable his System to use 
		Superior to his disease and hold them in check. That during the Second 
		period there influences Seemed to have fueled and his disability rapidly 
		increased. That during the 3d period his disability increased so rapidly 
		that he was almost wholly incapacitated for performing manual labor. He 
		was induced to again change climate. That while he returned to Indiana 
		was not perhaps the change that Should have been made, it was the best 
		that could be done under the circumstances. Financial circumstances 
		being such that there was really no other _ to him. That during the 4th 
		period, the change from a vigorous to a milder climate Seemed to have 
		implanted fresh vigor and he was enabled to in crease the amount of 
		Labor performed. That during the last year of Said period he again 
		completely broke down, and again he prepared to affect a change to a 
		Still milder climate, but through the intervention of friends he was 
		induced to except a position as Justice of the peace, which would afford 
		him a very simple necessaries of life. That during the last period he 
		has performed no manual labor whatever. That not with Standing the fact 
		that has done no labor during that time and has been protected from 
		exposure of every kind; his Said chronic disability of the bowels has 
		remained about the Same and his disability of the lungs or chest has 
		increased, Suffering most during the winter season of the year. That 
		during Oct and November his health is best and his weight increase from 
		135 to 170 lbs that he attributes this venation. James B. Carter. 
		Subscribed and Sworn to before me this the day of July 1881 and I 
		certify that the affiant is well known to me and that I know him to be

		Claim of Nancy E. Carter Widow
		
		In the matter of claim for Pension by Nancy E. Carter widow of James B. 
		Carter Co, E. 65 Ind. Inf. Claim W. O. No. 1089199. On this 30th day of 
		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public Jas. 
		A. Howard in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer 
		oaths to Herman O. Wulff, aged 42 years, a resident of Benson in the 
		County of Douglas and State of Nebraska whose Post Office address is 
		Benson Nebr. well know to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and 
		who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to the aforesaid case as 
		follows: That from on or about the year 1903 until the year 1911 I was 
		personally and well acquainted with James B. Carter and the claimant 
		Nancy E. Carter. I know that during the period of time above stated that 
		said parties lived together as husband and wife and were not divorced. I 
		know the above facts to be true from living in the same vicinity with 
		said parties in the years named and my acquaintance with them was such 
		that the facts could not have been different from as stated in all 
		reasonable probability without coming to my knowledge. Signed Herman O.

		In the matter of claim for pension by Nancy E. Carter widow of James B. 
		Carter Co. E, 65 Ind. Inf. Claim W.O. No. 1089199. On this 28th day of 
		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and 
		for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths J. M. 
		Christy aged 56 years a resident of Minneapolis in the county of 
		Hennepin and State of Minnesota whose Post Office address is 1140 
		Plymouth Blvd, Minneapolis, Minn. well know to me to be reputable and 
		entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to 
		the aforesaid case as follows: That I was personally and well acquainted 
		with James B. Carter and his wife, the claimant, Nancy E. Carter from on 
		or about the year 1911 until the death of James B. Carter, and with the 
		claimant since the death of her said husband. I know that said parties 
		lived together as husband and wife from on or about the year 1911 until 
		the death of James B. Carter, excepting during the period of time James 
		B. Carter was a member of the Minn. Soldiers Home. I know that said 
		parties were not divorced in the period of time above stated and that 
		the claimant has not married again since the death of her late husband 
		James B. Carter. I know the above from living in the same vicinity as 
		said parties in the time stated and my acquaintance with them was such 
		that the facts could not have been different from as herein given, in 
		all reasonable probability without coming to my knowledge. J. M. Christy
		
		In the matter of claim for pension by Nancy E. Carter widow of James B. 
		Carter Co. E, 65 Ind. Inf. Claim W.O. No. 1089199. On this 18th day of 
		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and 
		for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths Newton H. 
		Hine aged 60 years a resident of Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin 
		and State of Minnesota whose Post Office address is 6 Spencer Place, 
		Minneapolis, Minn. well know to me to be reputable and entitled to 
		credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to the aforesaid 
		case as follows: That he is a son in law of said James B. Carter. That 
		from on or about the year 1911 until the death of James B. Carter I was 
		personally and well acquainted with him and with the claimant Nancy E. 
		Carter from on or about 1911 to the present time. I know that James B. 
		Carter and the claimant lived together as husband and wife from on or 
		about the year 1911 until the death of James B. Carter, excepting during 
		the period of time that James B. Carter was a member of the Minn. 
		Soldiers Home. I know that said parties were not divorced in the period 
		of time stated and that the claimant has not married again since the 
		death of her late husband James B. Carter. I know that above to be true 
		from being in the same vicinity as said parties during the time given 
		and my acquaintance with them was such that the facts could not have 
		been different from as herein written in all reasonable probability

		Carter Co. E, 65 Ind. Inf. Claim W.O. No. 1089199. On this 30th day of 
		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public Carl 
		Madson in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer 
		oaths Jas. A. Howard aged 52 years a resident of Benson in the county of 
		Douglas and State of Nebraska whose Post Office address is Benson, Nebr. 
		well know to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being 
		duly sworn, declared in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That 
		I was personally and well acquainted with James B. Carter and his wife, 
		the claimant, Nancy E. Carter from on or about the year 1903 until 1911. 
		I know that said parties lived together as husband and wife during the 
		years above given and were not divorced. I know the above to be true 
		from being in the same vicinity as said parties during the years named, 
		and my acquaintance with them was such that the facts could not have 
		been different from as stated in all reasonable probability without

		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and 
		for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths Wm B. 
		Carter aged 68 years a resident of Shenandoah in the county of Page and 
		State of Iowa whose Post Office address is Shenandoah, Iowa. well know 
		to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, 
		declared in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That I was 
		personally and well acquainted with James B. Carter and the claimant 
		Nancy E. Carter during the year 1865 to 1874, and the year 1884 to 1903. 
		I know that during the periods of time above given that said parties 
		lived together as husband and wife and were not divorced. I know the 
		above from living in the same vicinity with said parties in the years 
		stated and my acquaintance with them was such that the facts could not 
		have been different from as herein written in all reasonable probability

		Carter Co. E, 65 Ind. Inf. Claim W.O. No. 1089199. On this 15th day of 
		December A.D. 1916; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and 
		for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths Thomas N. 
		Pace aged 85 years a resident of Shenandoah in the county of Page and 
		State of Iowa whose Post Office address is Shenandoah, Iowa. well know 
		to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, 
		declared in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That I was 
		personally and well acquainted with James B. Carter and the claimant 
		Nancy E. Carter during the year 1865 to 1874, and the year 1884 to 1903. 
		I know that during the periods of time above given that said parties 
		lived together as husband and wife and were not divorced. I know the 
		above from living in the same vicinity with said parties in the years 
		stated and my acquaintance with them was such that the facts could not 
		have been different from as herein written in all reasonable probability

		pension by Nancy E. Carter widow of James B. Carter Co E 65 Ind. Inf. 
		Claim W. O. No. 1089199. On this Eighteenth day of December A. D. 1916, 
		personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid 
		County duly authorized to administer oaths Margaret J. Lawrence aged 69 
		years, a resident of Evansville in the County of Vanderburgh and State 
		of Indian whose Post Office address is 203 Oak St., Evansville, Indiana, 
		well known to be to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being 
		duly sworn declared in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That 
		from a time prior to the claimant Nancy E. Carter arriving at a 
		marriageable age to the present time I have been personally and well 
		acquainted with her. I know that the claimant was never married prior to 
		her marriage to James B. Carter. I know that said parties lived together 
		as husband and wife from the date of their marriage until on or about 
		the year 1865 and from on or about the year 1874 to 1884, and that they 
		were not divorced during said periods of time. I know the above to be 
		true from my intimate acquaintance with said parties and being in the 
		same vicinity with them, and my acquaintance with said parties has been 
		such that I know that they lived together as husband and wife, without 
		divorce from the date of their marriage until the death of James B. 
		Carter, and that these facts could not have been different from as 
		herein given in all reasonable probability without coming to my

		pension by Nancy E. Carter widow of James B. Carter Co E 65 Ind. Inf. 
		Claim W. O. No. 1089199. On this Eighteenth day of December A. D. 1916, 
		personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid 
		County duly authorized to administer oaths Mollie Lewis aged 80 years, a 
		resident of Evansville in the County of Vanderburgh and State of Indian 
		whose Post Office address is 203 Oak St., Evansville, Indiana, well 
		known to be to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly 
		sworn declared in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That from a 
		time prior to the claimant Nancy E. Carter arriving at a marriageable 
		age to the present time I have been personally and well acquainted with 
		her. I know that the claimant was never married prior to her marriage to 
		James B. Carter. I know that said parties lived together as husband and 
		wife from the date of their marriage until on or about the year 1865 and 
		from on or about the year 1874 to 1884, and that they were not divorced 
		during said periods of time. I know the above to be true from my 
		intimate acquaintance with said parties and being in the same vicinity 
		with them, and my acquaintance with said parties has been such that I 
		know that they lived together as husband and wife, without divorce from 
		the date of their marriage until the death of James B. Carter, and that 
		these facts could not have been different from as herein given in all

		Sir: I have the honor to return herewith your request for a report of 
		hospital treatment in Claim, No. 308.356, with such information as is 
		furnished by the records filed in this Office, viz: That J. B. Carter 2 
		Lt. Co. E. 65 Ind. Vols. Was admitted to Officers Division of G. H. 
		Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga Tenn., June 20, 64, with consumption, 
		diagnosis also appears as debility, and returned to duty Aug 3� 64, that 
		James B. Carter, said Co, and Regiment entered Officers Branch of Gen�l 
		Field Hospt.____, Marietta Ga., Aug 23, 64, with piles, and was returned 
		to duty Sep 4, 64, and that he was discharged from service at Regimental 
		Hosp�l, Sep 21, 64, by reason of physical disability. No further record 
		found. There are no records of the Regiment, on file. J. J. Woodward,

		Captains Certificate
		
		State of Kansas, County of (blank) SS. I Edward A. Baker Captain of 
		Company (E) 65th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers Infantry do certify That 
		Lieut James B. Carter was enlisted in my Company (E) 65th Regiment of 
		Indiana Volunteers Infantry on the12 day of Aug 1862. That he was duly 
		Mustered in to the Service on the 18th of same month & year. That he was 
		afterwards promoted to 2d Lieutenant and that while in the line of his 
		duty at or near Dallas in the State of Georgia in the later part of May 
		1864 he was Sent to the field hospital on Lookout Mountain in Tenn. That 
		he came back to his regiment about the 1st of Aug 1864 when he suffered 
		a relapse, and was treated by A. R. Byers Regimental surgeon for chronic 
		Dysentery or Diarrhea until about the 20th of august when General 
		Sherman commenced his celebrated flank movement on Atlanta. He was 
		ordered to the hospital at Marietta George. Where he remained until 
		about the 3d day of September 1854 when he again came to the Regiment at 
		or near Decatur Georgia. Where he remained under the treatment of the 
		said Surgeon A. R. Byers, until about the 21st day of September 1864 
		when he was discharged from the Service for physical disability. I 
		further certify that I knew the Said James B. Carter for Several years 
		before going in to the Service. And that my recollection is that he was 
		a man of good physical constitution and Sound body. That I have been 
		with him, and have known him intimately part of the time Since and that 
		his is to the best of my knowledge and belief that he is incapacitated 
		from making a support by manual labor. I further certify that I am not 
		interested in the Pension claim of Lieut James B. Carter or concerned in 
		the prosecution of the Same. E. A. Baker, Late Maj 65th Ind Infty Vols.
		
		I certify that on the 9th day of December 1880 Maj Ellwood A. Baker 
		Later a Captain whom I know appeared before me a Justice of the Peace 
		within and for Said County and subscribed the foregoing affidavit and 
		made Oath to the contents of the Same and I further certify that I am 
		not interested in the pension claim of James B. Carter or concerned in

		State of Kansas, County of (blank) SS. I the undersigned Clerk of the 
		District Court in and for Said County hereby Certify that James Kelly 
		before whom the following affidavit was made and who has thereunto 
		Signed his name was at the time of So doing a Justice of the Peace in 
		and for Said County duly commissioned and Sworn that all his official 
		acts an entitled to full faith and credit and that his Signature 
		thereunto is Genuine and that I am not interested in the prosecution of 
		that claim. In testimony whereof I here unto Sign my name and affix my 
		Official Seal this the 9th day of December 1882.
		
		Pension Claim No. 200,580. Jas. B. Carter, Lt, Company C, Indiana 
		Volunteers, Shenandoah, Iowa Jul 2nd, 1890. We hereby certify that in 
		compliance with the requirements of the law we have carefully examined 
		this applicant, who states that he is suffering from the following 
		disability, incurred in the service, viz: Disease of lungs, chronic 
		Diarrhea resulting disease of heart & kidneys resulting general 
		disability, and that he receives a pension of Fifteen dollars per month. 
		He makes the following statement which he bases his claim for increase. 
		Heart failure is increasing also difficulty of breathing. Upon 
		examination we find the following objective conditions: Pulse rate, 84, 
		respiration 22; temperature 96 3/5, height 5 feet 10 inches; weight 145 
		pounds; age 54 years. Tongue coated & fissured dullness of upper lobe of 
		each lung with nearly absence of vesicular murmur at apex of each lung 
		with prolonged aspiration with tenderness & dry hacking cough with 
		slight micro purulent expectoration voice very weak talks with very 
		noticeable effort, enlarged liver fully 1/8 with tenderness over all 
		abdominal organs pains in lumbar region with great tenderness on 
		stooping over - urine spec __ 1020 strongly acid � enlarged prostrate 
		land to fully 2 � inches urethral measure with pain & irritability in 
		urinating � rectum inflamed with one internal open ulcer � weeping & 
		microbloody discharge � Hearts action feeble its area of dullness 
		increase 1/6 apex impulse increased & located in 6/12 __ space 3 inches 
		from medial line its first beat __ & prolonged evident dilatation of 
		left side pulse weak thready & __ Autirtum deficient then is great 
		general debility is wholly incapacitated for manual labor. He is in our 
		opinion, entitled to a 8/18 rating for the disability caused by Disease 
		of lungs 8/18 for that caused by diarrhea & heart disease 8/18 for that 
		caused by disease of prostrate gland & general debility. W. A. C. Moore,

		Declaration for Widow�s Pension: State of Minnesota, County of Hennepin, 
		ss: On this 13 day of December A.D. one thousand nine hundred and 
		sixteen, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for 
		the County and State aforesaid, Nancy E. Carter aged, 74 years, born 
		Sept 20, 1842 near Boonville, Ind. resident of Minneapolis county of 
		Hennepin, State of Minnesota who, being duly sworn according to law, 
		makes the following declaration in order to obtain pension, under the 
		provisions of the act of congress, approved April 19, 1980 amended by 
		Act Sept 8, 1916. That she is the widow of James B. Carter, who enlisted 
		under the name of James B. Carter on the 12 day of Aug. A. D., 1862, as 
		a Sergeant in Company E, in the 65 Regiment of Ind. Inf Volunteers, and 
		served at least ninety days in the late War of the Rebellion, in the 
		service of the United States, who was Honorably Discharged Sept 31, 1864 
		and died Dec 2, 1916. That she was married under the name of Nancy E. 
		Brown to said soldier James B. Carter on the 27th day of April A. D., 
		1859, by Wm. H. Grimm M. G. At Booneville Ind, there being no legal 
		barrier to such marriage; that she had not been previously married; that 
		her said husband had not been previously married. Signed Nancy E. Carter

		A general affidavit was given by Mollie Lewis aged 80 years a resident 
		of 203 Oak St., Evansville, Vanderburgh Co, IN dated 18 Dec 1916. Says 
		she knew James B. Carter before his marriage to Nancy.
		
		A general affidavit was given by Mary E. Pace aged 75 years, a resident 
		of Shenandoah, Page Co, IA dated 9 Dec 1916. She states that she knew 
		James B. Carter before his marriage to Nancy.
		
		On 13 Dec 1916, Frances J. Hine residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota 
		states that she has known Nancy Carter for 50 years. Frances is Nancy�s 
		daughter.
		
		At the same time Minne V. Orcutt gave her deposition saying that she had 
		known Nancy 15 years on the above date.

		When James enlisted in the military he was 25 years old, 5 feet 10 
		inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, a farmer and born 
		in Cumberland County, KY
		
		James stated on 14 Sep 1879 that �up to the last two years, Since which 
		time the people of the Township have been kind enough to give me the 
		position of J. P. in order to help me to make a living.�

		Nancy Eliza Carter became ill on 21 Feb 1925 and died on 28 Feb 1925, 
		dying of Nephrites. The person who acted as nurse during her illness was 
		Catherine Lyone 2208 Emerson Avenue. Also mentioned is F. C. Smith 
		residing at 2440 Girard Ave S.
		
		6 April 1925. Application for Reimbursement. Nancy Eliza Carter died 28 
		Feb 1925 due to Hermplegia and was last nursed by her daughter Mr. N. H. 
		Hine with whom Nancy lived at 2849 Irving Avenue S., Minneapolis, MN.
