Finding Our Warrick County, IN Ancestors
as compiled by Marge Rice
Martin Washington Rice was born 25 Aug 1842 in Lynnville (Warrick)
IN, to Axley and Elenor (Hunsaker) Rice. His wife was Susan Alice Myrick
Rice, whom he married 28 Jan 1868.
Martin Washington, known as "Uncle Wash" by all of the townspeople in
Lynnville, IN, lived all his life after the war in his native county, in
Hart Twp. He was a farmer and also worked in the town hardware store.
His grandsons remember him as a man who loved children. He fished a
lot, they said, and had a mare named "Bird". Serving as the town's
Notary Public, he was considered the unofficial mayor of Lynnville and
signed the official papers anyone needed signed. He received a Civil War
pension of $6.00 a month at the beginning, which grew at the end to
$90.00 per month. He was described in his pension papers as 5` 10" tall,
with black hair and eyes. He did not smoke or drink.
"Wash" was in the Civil War, joining on 20 Sep 1861, in Company K, 42nd
Indiana Infantry, with original erroneous paperwork, later corrected,
listing him as William W. Rice. Per Warrick Co. histories, Company K was
mustered into service on 11 Oct 1861, with a company of 98 men and 9
officers. Initially, he was at Camp Vanderburgh, near Evansville; from
there, duty "to 9 Feb1862 at Henderson, Calhoun, South Carrolton and
Owensboro, KY". "History of the Forty-Second Indiana Volunteer Infantry"
by S. F. Horrall, 1892, stated that the regiment "embarked at
Owensboro, KY on the steamer 'Liberty' , for Pittsburgh Landing, TN. The
fleet split, however and the 'Liberty' with the 42nd went up the
Cumberland River to Nashville, TN - thus missing the Battle of Shiloh."
From 10 Feb to 25 Feb1862, the 42nd Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry,
who wore on their caps the sign of a red acorn, "advanced on Nashville,
TN". From 28 Mar to 11 Apr 1862 was the occupation of Shelbyville and
Fayetteville, TN "with advance on Huntsville, AL".
He was wounded in his face, chest, leg and umbilical region when hit by
7 or 8 bullets on 11 Apr 1862 at Wartrace, Bedford Co., TN. Family
tradition is that he was left on the field for dead, and late in the
day, a lady who lived in the area went walking amongst the dead looking
for signs of life. She saw him alive and called her daughter to help her
carry him to their home. These women nursed him back to health and he
was taken later to Shelbyville, TN for treatment. The pension packet for
Grandpa Wash shows that he suffered in his later years partial paralysis
of his left side and right shoulder and arm, from the gunshot wounds
suffered in the battle at Wartrace, TN. At least four of the seven or
eight "mini-balls" which entered his body remained there until his
death. Some places the figure 7 is shown, and some places 8. 1) Ball
entered body about center of spine of left scapula - ball remains
in body. 2) Ball entered left side of abdomen 3" above crest of illium -
ball remains in body. 3) Two balls entered body on left side of face, on
line of angle of mouth. One ball passed inwards and upwards and was
extricated from right nostril, where it had knocked out three teeth from
upper jaw. 4) Ball entered just below angle of jaw - ball
remains in body. 5) Ball entered left hand between thumb and index
finger, passed through fleshy part of thumb. 6) Ball entered right side
of abdomen, 2" from linea alba and 3" above umbilicus - ball remains in
body.
Following treatment, Grandpa Wash returned to duty on 29 Nov 1862, and
served until his discharge on 14 Feb 1863. Frederick H. Dyer's "A
Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" states that the 42nd Indiana
Infantry from 7 Nov to 26 Dec1862, were in Nashville, TN. From 26 Dec
to 30 Dec 1862, they "advanced" on Murfreesboro, TN. "The Battle of
Stone's River" was 30 Dec 1862 to 3 Jan 1863. From 4 Jan 1863 to the
date of his discharge, the 42nd had "duty at Murfreesboro". The
Boonville (IN) "Standard" reported in their 10 Aug 1894 newspaper that
"M. W. "Wash" Rice had a lead ball removed from the left side of his
face and one taken from his side, reportedly both received during the
war while at Wartrace, TN, on 11 Apr 1862, at which time 4 companies of
the 42nd Indiana Volunteers were doing guard duty." He was reported to
have had at least five bullets still in his body at his death.
He apparently met Susan Myrick in Amelia, Ohio, (east of Cincinnati)
after the Civil War. They married 28 Jan 1868 in Clermont, OH, living
first in Amelia, at least until after Aaron B. was born 26 Apr 1868, and
then came down through the Ohio River valley to Warrick Co. where they
lived out their lives. Wash died in Dec 1926 in Hart Twp. (Warrick) IN,
and he is buried in Lynnville Cemetery. His death certificate states
that he died at age 84 from heart lesion and arterio-sclerosis, with
"caries of the bones and feet".
