DR JAMES R. TILLMAN was born in Cumberland KY in 1826, He graduated from Evansville Medical College in 1850, He went to Taylorsville to practice while there he was elected postmaster.
At a meeting of the PLANK ROAD COMPANY he was named secretary of the company in 1853, Its not known when he arrived in Newburgh but after practicing here for 3 years he entered JEFFERSON MEDICAL COLLEGE in Philadelphia where he graduated 1860.
He returned to Newburgh shortly after graduation and April 24 1861 at a meeting of citizens of Newburgh held at UNION BETHELL'S storeroom the doctor was named chairman of INDEPENDENT MILITARY COMPANY organizing the NEWBURGH HOME GUARD with 100 men enrolled. In May 1862 DR TILLMAN was in charge of two Union Hospitals in Newburgh, The largest was at the EXCHANGE HOTEL.
In 1868 DR TILLMAN in partnership with his son founded J R TILLMAN and SON a drugstore on Water St in Newburgh. DR TILLMAN enjoyed an active life and died SEPT 5 1895 and was buried in ROSE HILL.
