Garwood, William Stokes

WM STOKES GARWOOD a native of LOGAN CO OHIO came to Newburgh with his
family in 1847 and was apprenticed that same year to JAMES URIE to learn
the blacksmith trade. In 1852 he and his brother opened a blacksmith and
wagon making shop on State St.
During the next few years he married LAURA WILDER. They made their home
on State St raising six children. MR. GARWOOD a heavyset man with dark
hair, full beard and mustache served as Master of NEWBURGH MASONIC LODGE
from 1865 to 1869. Lodge records attest that he accidentally shot
himself and died Mar 1, 1881. It is said by some his ghost roams the
house in the dark of night.
