WM STOKES GARWOOD a native of LOGAN CO OHIO came to Newburgh with his family in 1847 and was apprenticed that same year to JAMES URIE to learn the blacksmith trade. In 1852 he and his brother opened a blacksmith and wagon making shop on State St.

During the next few years he married LAURA WILDER. They made their home on State St raising six children. MR. GARWOOD a heavyset man with dark hair, full beard and mustache served as Master of NEWBURGH MASONIC LODGE from 1865 to 1869. Lodge records attest that he accidentally shot himself and died Mar 1, 1881. It is said by some his ghost roams the house in the dark of night.
