as compiled by Marge Rice

The text below contains information about the Rice Family as compiled by Marge Rice. If you have further information or questions please email her. Information spans from 1790 to 1930. No information is provided on the living.
1. Joseph Rice (1790-1845) and Frances Broadwell (this section will include data on John Rice) as well as Joseph and Frances's sons: Axley, Miles and Union.
2. Son Axley Rice (1811-1896) and Ellen Hunsaker
3. Son Martin W. Rice (1842-1926) and Susan Myrick - Martin Washington Rice served in the Civil War.
4. Son Aaron B. Rice (1868-1939) and Matilda Wittman.
Joseph Rice was born 12 Feb 1790, location unknown. I have been searching so long, but never found any records where he gave indication of a birthplace. In the 1880 census for Warrick Co., his sons (Axley) said KY; and (Miles) VA (and Union did not know).

Joseph moved with his parents to Kentucky prior to his marriage (or so says son, Miles, in the mugbook, but this may or may not be true), and it is quite possible that Joseph and Frances actually met in Warren Co., KY, as it appears that both an Abraham Reese and David Broadwell were in Warren Co., KY as early as 1802. I do NOT know the Rice/Reese connection as of now, and indeed there may be none!

Joseph Reese married Frances Broadwell in Warren Co., Kentucky. Their children were born in Warren Co., KY in 1811, 1812 and 1816. The marriage license listed both names in error: JOSEPH H. REESE - FANNY BRANDWELL - 17 NOV 1809. Note here that Joseph, married under name REESE, was listed by censustaker in 1820 DuBois Co. as ROYSE. His children were named RICE, and all records in Warrick Co. list him as RICE. On his tombstone is the name RISE.

After 1816 sometime, Joseph and family moved to Washington Co., IN, and then to Crawford Co., IN. - these counties given in data from son Miles Rice in "History of Warrick, Spencer and Perry Counties, IN", a mugbook published 1885. Joseph and John appear side by side in the 1820 Dubois Co. census. Joseph is listed with 3 males under ae 10 (their sons), 1 male 10 to 16 (who? a hired hand?), 1 male 16 to 26 (who?), two males 26 to 45 (he was one, who was the other?) and 2 females 26 to 45 (Frances was one, who else?). Might Joseph and/or Frances have had elderly parents living with them?

Joseph was known consistently in his final chosen home, Warrick Co., IN as Joseph RICE, and nowhere in Warrick did I find the name as Reese (the name listed on the marriage license in Warren Co., KY). The "History of Warrick Co., IN" says that Joseph Rice was among the earliest settlers, and intimates it was shortly after 1816. Land office records at Vincennes, IN show that Joseph bought 40 acres of land on 1 Aug 1839, in the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 14 in township 4-S, Range 8-W. Son Axley's obituary states that the family moved from KY to IN in 1817. The Historical Atlas of Warrick Co. (1880) says that Joseph came to Hart Twp. in the spring of 1827, and settled on land which had previously been lived on and cleared by a Jonathan Cox. Frances' obituary says "In 1827, her husband opened up a farm where Mt. Zion Church now stands," and where the cemetery is today.

The name on Joseph's gravestone was Joseph RISE: "In memory of Joseph Rise, born Feb. 12th 1790. Dyed March 16th 1845. Aged 55 years and 1 month and 4 days. 'Behold ye strangers passing by, As you are now, so once was I; As I am now, so you must be, Prepare for death and follow me.'" How and why the name is RISE is still a mystery to me, unless it was simply a mistake by the stonecarver, which was never corrected by family (who all went by the name of Rice).

Our Joseph Rice is documented as having been appointed as Supervisor of a portion of Petersburgh Rd., commencing at the south end of the bridge on Big Creek and ending at the 23rd milepost of said road. This appointment was made by the Warrick Co. Board of Justices on 3 May 1830. In Adams' "History of Warrick Co., IN", 1868, a story is told of "a man named Rice, residing on one of the extremes of the county before it was reduced to its present territorial limits", and states that Rice lost a cow one spring. He found that a man named Bond, living some 8 miles distant, had the cow and its calf in his enclosure. Bond refused, and Rice went to J. P. Shane. A trial was held, and Rice got his cow and calf back. This Rice may have been Joseph, although I have no proof.

JOSEPH'S BROTHER, JOHN B. RICE:
John B. Rice (DOB: 7 Mar or 7 Jun 1778) was brother of Joseph. I found Joseph and John next to each other in 1820 DuBois Co. census. John appointed Joseph and Axley Rice to be the executors of his estate on 7 Dec 1841. A John Rice was in Indiana's 4th U.S. Infantry regiment, from 31 Oct 1811 to 31 Dec 1811, and in this John's daughter's marriage license, he is referred to as John B. Rice. He died 26 Jan 1846, and he and his wife are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Warrick Co., IN, just west of Joseph Rice/Rise!

John married Sydney Pigman of Ohio Co., KY on 29 Jun 1809 (she was the daughter of Rev. Ignatious and Susannah (Lamar) Pigman (her DOB: 9 Nov 1791 though some show 9 Nov 1794; she died 22 Apr 1877). [PIGMAN notes: Ignatious was born ca 1755 MD to Matthew & Mary Pigman; married Susannah in 1777 Montgomery Co., MD, and was Ohio County's first local minister, a Methodist. He became involved in land speculation, acquiring titles to lands around Muddy Creek. He went back to Frederick Co./, MD and sold land rights to neighbors and friends in exchange for their Maryland homes. Thus began the Methodist migration to Ohio Co., KY. Sales were done in good faith, but the ones who bought bottomland lost it because they could not grow crops due to flooding. Many lawsuits against Rev. Pigman resulted, with Sheriff's sales of land. Ignatious became insolvent, left his wife in KY and moved before 1810 census with his son, to Louisiana, dying in 1815 in New Orleans. Sydney's siblings were:
Wesley, Rhoda (Stephen) Statler; Anne (Samuel) Work; Philena (Harrison)
Taylor; and Sally (Daniel) Morrison.]

In the 1820 Dubois Co. census, John Rice's family appears with 1 male 15 to 26 (who? a hired hand?), 1 male 26 to 45 (himself), 4 females under 10 (yes), 1 female 16 to 26 (wrong age; Sydney was ae 28). Federal land records at Vincennes land office show that John Rice and William Carnahan together bought a total of 56 acres on 15 Mar 1837. William Carnahan was John's son in law, and the land was located in the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 18, township 4-So., Warrick Co.
Children of John B. and Sydney (Pigman) Rice were:
1. Philena (Heleney at times). It is obvious she was the dau. of Sydney before John and Sydney were married (she was born ca 1801 - based on fact she was listed as ae 51 when she died in Oct 1858 - OR - born ca 1807 as her age was listed as 21 at time of her Nov 1828 marriage); married 12 Nov 1828 Warrick Co. (or per Dorothy Elliott on 11 Feb 1829) to Isaac Powers (his DOB: Sep 1802 in KY). Lived in 1850 in Anderson Twp., Warrick Co. Isaac Powers was born ca 1803 per 1850 census. Philena died 30 Oct 1858 and Isaac 8 Feb 1889 Warrick Co.
Children were:
A. Minerva (female, born ca 1830)
B. Mariah J. (female, born ca 1832)
C. Laura E. (DOB: 15 Jul 1833; died 25 May 1909
Gentryville, Spencer Co., IN)); married William Stephens (born ca 1831); children all born Warrick Co.:

D. George Wesley (born either 18 Mar or 31 May 1835;
marriages in county records show four for George W. - and research continues, inasmuch as there probably were two by the same name there:
1) Warrick Co. Mariah Floyd on 7 Jun 1850 - note that George Wesley at that time was 15 y/o, so this Geo. W. probably was NOT him; 2) Warrick Co. 27 Apr 1856 Nancy Jane Phillips, born 12 Jul 1835; 3) Spencer Co. 9 Apr 1873 Anna Thurman; 4) Spencer Co. 18 Mar 1875 Spencer Co. Nancy Sandage;

2. Clarisa DOB: 17 Sep 1813 Married 10 Jun 1832
to William H. Carnahan (William born 12 Oct 1812 Limestone Co., AL, per descendant Darrell Carnahan). Clarisa died 6 Dec 1844 and is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. On 1 Aug 1839, William bought in his own name alone (separate from John Rice), 56 acres and 10/100 of an acre, in the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 19, in township
4-So. of Range 7-W, per records at Vincennes land office. The 1850 Warrick Co. census, Owen Twp. shows William living with second wife Catherine (McNeily), whom he married 11 Feb 1845. William (listed as ae. 30 - which is wrong) and Catherine (ae. 26) lived next door to Sidney (Pigman) Rice and Clarisa's siblings Frances, George and Mariah. Listed were Clarisa's children (all born Warrick Co.):

Darrell Carnahan shows these other children - Frances (born ca 1847) and Serelda (born ca 1849) but since they did not appear, possibly they had died before census. Darrell's list continues with Mary (ca 1853), Sylvester Willard (born May 1856), Nancy B. (ca 1857), Susan (ca. 1858), Amanda (ca 1864) and Cornelius (born 13 Sep 1864).

9. Mariah (DOB: ca 1833 in Indiana). "Unmarried"
10. or 10 and 11: America (DOB: ca 1836) and Sally, possibly named Amanda (DOB: ca 1837) - were these twins or the same person? Amanda IS shown with brother George (age 18) at the farm of George and Amanda Taylor in Pigeon Twp., Warrick Co. at 1850 census.

Referencing Miles Rice's statement in mugbook that his father had been in Washington Co., IN, although I did NOT find any proof of that when I was there, I did find that there had been a John Rice there. John Rice had a water mill below Fredericksburg, on the Blue River, after 1808 sometime, with inference that it was ca 1810/12. In 1820, the following ROYSE surnames were in Washington Co. census: Frederick, Gabriel, John, Martin, William, all living close to one another.

I have found a Joseph Rice and a John Rice, as soldiers in the War of 1812, from KY, both in Lewis' 5th Regiment of KY Volunteers. This may or may not have been our Joseph and John. Needs to be researched.

Proofs of above include 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 census Warrick Co., IN.; 1820 census Dubois Co., IN; burial records from Mt. Zion Cemetery, and "Marriage Records" from Warrick Co.; written info from John Powell of Evansville's Willard Library; "Warrick Co., IN Will Book A", pg. 55 (Joseph) and pg. 53 (John); data from researcher Vaughn Rice; Histories of Warrick Co., IN.; letters to me from Marie Ricketts, granddau. of Union Rice; Pike Co. History, pg. 450; "Ohio Co., KY" by Taylor; "Early Families of Hart Twp., Warrick Co., IN" by Phyllis Jamison, 1995; "Four Histories of Warrick Co., IN" by Warrick Chapter DAR, Boonville, 1978; data from Shirley Wyman citing Bible records and records from Schafer Funeral Home; Warrick Co.
