Notes for GEORGE MARTIN VAN BUREN TENNYSON:
IN MEMORY OF GEORGE M.V. TENNYSON

Died, April 29, 1922, at his home in Tennyson, after an illness of only six days duration. George M.V. Tennyson, one of our oldest citizens and the man who gave our town its name, at the advanced age of 82 years, surrounded by children and grandchildren, who did all that could be done to make his days happy. After the death of his wife, Rebecca Hook Tennyson, with whom he had walked the path of life for over fifty years he lived on at the old home where they had started housekeeping.

Their home was ever open to the homeless, and the care and devotion which the children, grandchildren, relatives and neighbors showed him in his declining years proved the esteem in which he was held.

Of the family of five children, three daughters survive him; Mrs. Minerva J. Rhodes of Boonville, Mrs. Emma Byers and Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson of Evansville; besides a brother James Tennyson of Boonville, and Mrs. Jonas Hinman of Boonville and Martin Hook of Newburgh, brother and sister of his wife, also 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the home May 1 by Rev. Pearson and the remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife and two little sons at Garrison Cemetery.

Even down to old age all his people shall prove

His matchless, eternal, unchangeable love,

And when hoary hair shall their temples adorn,

Like lambs they shall still in His bosom be born.

Mrs. WH. Dryer

The town of Tennyson, Indiana was named for this man, George Martin Van Buren Tennyson, because when the railroad "came through" it ran over 280 acres of his land. The granddaughter of George and Rebecca, whose name is also Rebecca (Rebecca Simpson Brown) told Fonda Lawhead that she remembered her mother, Elizabeth, who was the first daughter of George and Rebecca Tennyson telling her she was a young girl at home when the railroad work was in progress and her mother cooked for some of the "hands" and they slept in the barn and wherever they could. some were foreigners. Fonda's mother, Elizabeth Rhodes Chapman, was a post-mistress at the Tennyson, Indiana post office for two years before her marriage to Ollie Chapman.

Notes for REBECCA ANN HOOK:
WELL KNOWN WOMAN PASSES AWAY AT HER HOME IN INDIANA

Mrs. Rebecca Tennyson, wife of George Tennyson of Tennyson, Indiana died at her home of pneumonia on Jan. 6, 1915 aged 73 years. She was one of Warrick County's early settlers, and having passed her entire married life at the old home where she died, having passed their golden wedding February 16, 1914.

She was a member of the regular Baptist church for forty years, and a faithful devoted follower of her Master. Her home was ever open to the homeless, having raised seven orphan children besides her own family, to which she was a devoted mother.

The loss in her home cannot be estimated, and words are too weak to express our sympathy for the aged husband who has walked by her side for half a century and shared her joys and cares.

Their married life was blessed by five children--two boys and three girls. The little boys were called home in childhood. The three daughters, 27 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren are left to comfort the declining years of the father.

Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Lauman,--By her request her grandsons acted as pall-bearers. Two grandsons, W. H. Rhodes and J. F. Williams of the U.S. Navy were unable to attend.

We who cared for her can only bow to the Master's will knowing she has only gone to claim her crown "which God the righteous judge shall give to those who love his appearing.

Mrs. William Dryer.

INTERESTING NOTE:
